Rules

The Joy of 8mm operates largely on trust and goodwill but even we have to lay down a few ground rules. Please read the following carefully before completing the entry form.

1. Entry deadlines for the next challenge will be published early in 2005.

2. We typically have twenty five colour and twenty five B/W cartridges to give out for each challenge. In the event that we are oversubscribed, the first twenty five names in each category drawn out of the hat by an independent adjudicator will be invited to take part. The increasing popularity of the event means there will always be people who are disappointed. Please don't take it personally and remember that the next event is only a few months away.

3. If you are invited to take part in the challenge, either you or a representative of your team must attend the half day training workshop that we hold prior to sending out cartridges and cameras. This workshop will get you up to speed on topics such as pre-planning, storyboarding, casting, film shooting techniques, editing-in-camera and non-synch sound design. It will also be an opportunity for you to meet your fellow Joy of 8'ers and to quiz us on any aspects of the challenge that you are unclear about.

4. The film cartridge we give you is the one you must use. It will be security marked to avoid cheating.

5. You must supply some sort of soundtrack with your film or make arrangements to perform sound live at the screening (coconuts, gravel trays and pianists all welcome). Remember…even so-called ‘silent films' always had a musical accompaniment!

6. In accepting the challenge, you also agree to attend the screening event. We reserve the right not to show films that are unaccompanied by their makers.

7. The deadline for returning your exposed cartridge is strict. Sorry but no latecomers will be admitted.

8. Whilst we promise to lavish love and attention upon your film whilst it is in our possession, we can accept no liability for any loss or damage to it.

9. The copyright in your film remains with you. You are responsible for clearing all aspects of it for use including actors and music. We will send out sample clearance forms with the film cartridge for you to complete. We cannot be held responsible for any failure by you to clear the use of copyrighted material used in your film.

10. The distribution rights to the film remain with you although you grant to us the non-exclusive right to screen the film at The Joy of 8mm events, to stream the film on our website and to use it for the purposes of publicising The Joy of 8mm to the wider world. You are responsible for ensuring that all copyright is cleared to enable us to exhibit the film in these ways.

11. We reserve the right not to screen films that are defamatory, revoltingly offensive or which transgress the laws of the land. Apart from that, anything goes !
